What buying links means
You pay a news site, a blog or a niche site to publish an article with a link to your website. Google uses links as votes of confidence: when a relevant outlet links to you, it tells Google your content deserves to be cited, and your domain gains the authority to rank any of its pages.
Google says links should come naturally from good content. Anyone who runs a website as a business knows that, within a reasonable time frame, this is wishful thinking: a quality link is a scarce resource and it has a cost, in money or in hours. You can earn links for free with campaigns, expert contributions or by replicating your competitors' links, but the time they take rarely pays off.
Is it safe to buy backlinks?
Google's spam policies count buying links that pass PageRank as link spam, and ask that a paid link carry rel="sponsored" (or nofollow). In practice, what Google does with the artificial links it detects (sites with no traffic, over-optimized anchors, blog networks posing as media) is ignore them: they count neither for nor against you, and you lose what you paid.
Manual actions exist, but they are reserved for spam at scale: thousands of links from junk domains, the same anchor everywhere, PBN packages. Buying a few links on topical sites with real readers is a long way from that. The real risk isn't a penalty, it's wasted money.
ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews don't read PageRank: they learn which brands exist, and in what context, from what the media say. That's why a mention on an outlet in your sector also counts for GEO (AI visibility), even when the link is nofollow.

Real traffic and its trend
A site with real readers can send you visits as well as authority. Check the trend in Ahrefs, Semrush or Sistrix: a sustained drop is a bad sign.

What else pushes the price up or down
The country: in 2025 a German outlet cost €618 on average, a Spanish one €130 and a Colombian one €59. The niche: finance, health, gambling and legal cost more. The link type: dofollow costs more than nofollow. And the format: a new article costs more than a link inserted into an existing one.

News sites or blogs?
News sites with traffic bring credibility: returning readers, fresh content, Google News and Discover, and plenty of authority. Niche blogs reach a segmented audience and, with less content competing for attention, your article gets seen. It isn't natural for every link to come from newspapers: combine niche blogs for topical authority with press for your brand. In 2025, for the first time, press overtook blogs in our study: 50.8% of publications.
The strategy, in six rules
- Prioritize URLs already ranking between positions 5 and 20 for searches with commercial intent.
- See which sites link to your competitors: if they already linked to them, they accept sponsored content and they're relevant to your sector.
- Vary the anchor: brand, naked URL and generic anchors as well as the exact keyword, especially if you're starting from zero.
- Spread it over time: 2 or 3 publications a month for months looks more natural than 20 in one month.
- Measure after six weeks whether the URL moved, and base the next purchase on that.
- Avoid the expensive mistakes: buying on DR without checking traffic, cheap bulk packages, orphan sections and sites outside your sector.
